Landmines
Kurdistan in Iraq has faced an additional humanitarian disaster over the last decade due to the numbers of landmines scattered across the region. There are an estimated 4 million landmines which have killed and maimed many civilians and turned large tracts of agricultural land into death traps. As Kurdistan in Iraq still has no recognised international status, it cannot be a signatory to the Ban Treaty on landmines and has constantly been denied access to funding for existing mine-clearing programmes.
The following sites have a lot of useful information about the problem in Southern Kurdistan and landmines in general.
